First off, we had a few gripes. It s a
beautiful restaurant in one of the
best locations in town, a stone s
throw from the lakefront and
downtown Queenstown. But, for
what we paid there were a few
things that really need improving.
We ordered artichokes and ricotta
ravioli ($18) and a duck rilette with
apple chutney and cider vinegar
($21) for entrees, mushroom and
truffle risotto ($32) and grilled
tiger prawns with Mediterranean
vegetables ($35) for mains and a
chocolate trio ($16) and crepe
suzette ($16) for dessert.
The ravioli was great, although we
had to ask for cracked pepper and
the duck rilette, chunky pate-style
served with crusty bread was very
tasty. The risotto was a nice dish,
although again we had to ask for
pepper but the texture and
flavours were good.
The prawns were good, served in a
griddle pan but the vegetables,
also in the pan, were mushy,
watery and lacked flavour. We
weren t sure what they d done but
Mediterranean-style shouldn t be
watery mush. The prawns were
well-cooked with good flavour but
overall the dish was disappointing.
As for dessert, the crepes were
thick and too boozy. OK, there
might be a style of crepe like this
but any time this reviewer has
been in France the crepes were
wafer-thin. These were pancakes.
The flavour was overpoweringly
orange liqueur and the texture
was close to soggy pizza base.
The trio of chocolate was pretty

while I don t mind pouring during a
meal it would ve been nice to have
staff at least offer to top up our
glasses during the meal.
Staff failed to acknowledge one of
the review team when she went to
the toilet, they were unsmiling,
chatting away and one of them
was feeding herself from a mug
using a teaspoon.
One of the blackboard menus
outside had yesterday s specials
on it and when we walked in,
although it was early, there was
no-one there. We had to ask what
the daily fish and soup specials
were, a major fail in this reviewer s
All basic; greet the customer, seat
them, bring water, offer drinks, tell
them the specials. Throughout the
meal we were checked but on a
couple of occasions staff asked
one of the review team if
everything was OK but ignored
the other diner.
Well, it s a beautiful building, clean
and fresh, tastefully decorated
with plenty of dusty bottles of
wine and paraphernalia to satisfy

expensive and given that for
around the $200 mark (including
a bottle of pinot noir) there are
numerous other restaurants that
offer fantastic food and great
service. We won t be rushing back.

Although the food was fresh, the
crepes resembled pancakes, the
vegetables were a weird texture,
almost slimy and the service left a
lot to be desired.
The atmosphere was great but
let s hope the owners, who have
run Les Alpes for years, can lift
