Stunning: You'll hear a grey warbler before you see it.
Bring in the birds
with smart plants
Make garden an avian haven
Birds of a feather flock together
and they'll flock to your garden if
you plant the right trees. Attract
fantails, kereru and grey warblers
by planting the right tucker.
Who doesn't like a fantail? These seemingly
carefree birds flit about the garden almost
right in front of you if insects are present.
That's exactly what they eat, usually caught
on the wing.
To attract the flittering fantail, plant a
variety of native trees and shrubs that
provide an ideal nesting habitat as well as
food for insects.
Divaricating plants, for example, are great
homes for insects, so try the shrubby
tororaro (Muehlenbeckia astonii -- it's great
for hedging) and certain coprosma species.
Flower and fruit-bearing plants also attract
insects. Native shrubs with abundant flowers
include olearia and hebe.
The different hebes flower at different times
of the year. Plant a variety to get year-round
Pieces of apple or other fruit suspended in
trees will attract small insects and in turn
New Zealand wood pigeon/kereru
Kereru mainly eat the berries of native
plants but during winter, when berries are
scarce, they'll eat the tender leaves and
shoots of such plants as kowhai, broom,
poplar and willow. They will also eat the
nectar-filled flowers of kowhai and have
developed a taste for the flowers, buds and
shoots of tree lucerne (Chamaecytisus
To keep them happy, plant kowhai and a
range of fruit-producing native trees and
shrubs, including coprosma, five-finger
(Pseudopanax laetus), native fuchsia
(Fuchsia excorticata), hinau (Elaeocarpus
dentatus), miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea),
nikau (Rhopalostylis sapida), pate
(Schefflera digitata), pigeonwood
(Hedycarya arborea), puriri, titoki (Alectryon
excelsus) and wineberry.
Puriri provides flowers almost year round, so
this is a good choice if you have the room.
Found in both rural and urban areas, grey
warblers are fairly common birds but they're
a little shy. They mostly eat insects, larvae
and spiders obtained from tree bark, leaves
and twigs, though they sometimes eat small
fruits too. They also eat flies, but sadly I
don't think you could attract them into your
house to keep down the population.
To attract the grey warbler into your garden,
plant a variety of native trees and shrubs to
mimic a bush garden and to encourage
insects, including manuka (Leptospermum
scoparium), kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) and
ngaio (Myoporum laetum). Plants that
attract fantails will also attract grey
Garden mulch and leaf litter also attract
insects into the garden.
