Spoil mum this Mother's Day
Everyone loves their mum,
and so it's only fitting that
there's a special day to
Sure, in an ideal world every day would
be Mother's Day, and she'd feel
appreciated all year around.
But Mother's Day on May 12 gives us the
opportunity to show our mums just how
loved they are and how much we respect
their contribution to our lives.
After all, being a mother (or father for that
matter) is no easy job, and it certainly
comes with its fair share of challenges.
While the modern Mother's Day was only
introduced around the beginning of the
20th Century, it has antecedents in both
early Pagan and Christian societies.
It was in 1912 that American Anna Jarvis
trademarked 'Mother's Day' and formed
the Mother's Day International Associ-
Jarvis insisted that apostrophe fall before
the 's' in Mother's so as to celebrate each
individual mother, rather than the
These days nearly every country has their
equivalent celebration, each with its own
colourful history and traditions.
New Zealand takes it cue from Jarvis's
American holiday, rather than the
Christian Mothering Sunday, which falls on
a different day each year.
For us it falls on the second Sunday in
May, and is celebrated in any number of
While having a meal together is one of the
favoured ways of marking the occasion,
there are other options.
Certainly flowers and chocolate are more
than acceptable, but other kinds of more
personal gifts may be appreciated too.
As Mother's Day is such a great time to
share memories, perhaps a scrapbook of
photos and other memorabilia is a good
And while the memories are flowing, it
could be a good day to start an oral
history, so mum's memories are recorded
Or maybe it's just a good occasion to
quietly tell mum that you love her without
too much fuss.
It's up to you, but Mother's Day is a great
opportunity to show your appreciation.
What to get for the mother who wants for nothing
Although we love our mothers dearly, it's fair to say they are the hardest people to buy gifts for.
By JENNA VAN DER HOORN
From Christmas, to birthdays, to Mother's Day: it's simply
not an easy task.
With fathers, you know you can draw from a pool of
resources. How can you go wrong with a box of beer or any car
or bike related product? Dad will always love what you get him
as long as you appeal to his tastes.
But with Mum, she's so busy looking after the kids, the house
and the family that we often lose sight of her hobbies,
interests and anything else she holds dear to her.
But if there's one thing we know, it's that once we can gain an
idea of what she would like, the appreciation is great.
So what do you get for the mother who has everything? Or the
mother who appears to want for nothing
yet never treats herself?
It's time to become an investigator.
Whether you live at home with your
mother, or you visit her with your own
children, just by looking around and taking
notice of things, it will soon become
obvious what holds her interest.
Does she have lots of same-themed items
around the home? For example, bright
coloured vases, dining sets and tablecloths?
Does she buy the same magazine every
week? Does she watch a lot of TV? Appeal
to her interests, make her see you are taking
Buy her something bright to match what
she has, get her a magazine subscription to
her favourite magazine, buy her a TV
programme subscription or a new TV if it's
within your budget. By seeing what she
takes pleasure from, she will love the
thought that has gone into the gift.
But some mothers simply just don't show
what they love. You can never go wrong
with a box of chocolates and a heartfelt
card, a picture of the grandchildren or
breakfast in bed. Everything is appreciated
to show YOUR appreciation for HER.
