Pupil not one
Jaide unaware of Blake honour
By EMMA DAWE
A Cromwell youngster got the
surprise of her life on Friday when
she was awarded the Sir Peter Blake
Young Leader Award during her
Jaide Dixon, 11, from Goldfields
Primary School hadn't even heard of
the award when she was called up to
receive it in front of her peers, her
mum, nana and granddad.
The award recognises young people
who have shown promising leader-
ship in their school and community.
The award is presented to one pupil
in each primary and intermediate
school which choose to be part of the
initiative with the recipient selected
by their teachers and peers.
Jaide's teacher, Barbara Simmers,
nominated Jaide because of her
outstanding leadership qualities.
''She has real compassion and
empathy for those less fortunate
than herself,'' Mrs Simmers said.
''She encourages and sees the good
in everyone regardless. With youn-
ger children, she is a role model and
always willing to go the extra mile.''
She was a talented sportsperson,
playing netball and soccer as well as
enjoying swimming and running,
but was very humble and would
never look for the limelight, she said.
''As a teacher I see her strong sense
of what is right and what is wrong,
and how she takes a lead in making
sensible decisions. She consistently
does the right thing and her sense of
fairness and her compassion make
her a very special girl.''
Jaide said she liked helping people
because it ''feels good'' to help
As part of the award, she received a
Sir Peter Blake Trust medal and pin,
a pair of Sir Peter Blake Trust red
socks, a motivational DVD and a
book about Sir Peter Blake.
She said her mum, former Common-
wealth Games medal-winning high-
jumper Tania Murray, was very
proud of her and gave her a bracelet
and took her out for tea to recognise
